Governor Culver Announces $5 Million In I-JOBS Disaster Damage Housing Assistance
Continues Assistance to Homeowners Impacted by 2008 Natural Disasters
DES MOINES – The I-JOBS initiative continues to move forward as Governor Chet Culver today announced that $5 million in I-JOBS Disaster Damage Housing funds have been allocated. The funds will provide assistance for Iowans whose homes were destroyed or damaged by the natural disasters of 2008.
“This allocation of I-JOBS funds helps to meet one of the key goals of the program, which is to rebuild from the severe weather of 2008,” Governor Culver said. “This money will help Iowa homeowners, and is just one of the important components of I-JOBS which will strengthen our economy, recover from disasters, and preserve or create thousands of jobs.”
The Disaster Damage Housing Program is a provision of the I-JOBS initiative established to ease and speed the state’s recovery efforts. The eleven Entitlement Cities and lead Councils of Governments administering the State Jumpstart Program were eligible to apply for the funds allocated by the Iowa Finance Authority.
Homeowners may apply for Disaster Damage Housing funds through their area’s Council of Government or Entitlement City. The funds may assist disaster-impacted homeowners with expenses including interim mortgage assistance, down payment assistance on a replacement home or rehabilitation assistance. Homeowners who have already applied for Jumpstart do not need to re-apply.

The Culver/Judge I-JOBS program will invest $830 million over the next two years to create and retain jobs, strengthen the economy, recover from last year’s natural disasters, and improve Iowa’s infrastructure. The funds will be used to upgrade Iowa’s roads and bridges, invest in renewable energy projects, improve water quality, and upgrade public facilities such as the Iowa Veterans Home. I-JOBS is funded with existing gaming revenue, meaning no increase in taxes.
