Governor Culver Meets With New FEMA Administrator Fugate; Pledges Commitment To Help Iowa Continue With Recovery Efforts
Governor to hold conference call with Iowa reporters tomorrow following National Governors’ Association Summer meeting
BILOXI, MS – At the National Governors’ Association Summer meeting, Governor Chet Culver met with newly appointed FEMA Administrator W. Craig Fugate. The Governor and the Administrator discussed future areas of state and federal collaboration in Iowa’s continuing rebuilding efforts after the disasters of 2008.
“I appreciate the opportunity to visit with Administrator Fugate,” said Governor Culver. “We had a very lengthy discussion about the continued importance of our coordinated efforts, and I appreciate Administrator Fugate’s willingness to help us on our long road to recovery. I look forward to working with him, and the entire administration in the future.”
“Meeting Governor Culver was an important and productive step in our ongoing effort to strengthen our national emergency response team. FEMA’s primary responsibility is to support our Governors as they protect their citizens before, during, and after a disaster. This meeting went a long way in furthering that ability for the people of Iowa,” said Administrator Fugate.
Governor Culver and Administrator Fugate discussed a proposed visit to Iowa by the new head of FEMA, as well as the important role of the new I-JOBS initiative in creating new opportunities for disaster recovery and rebuilding. In addition, the Governor and Administrator agreed to review progress thus far and to work together on the path ahead to ensure recovery efforts continue.
NOTE: Governor Culver will hold a conference call with Iowa reporters on Tuesday, July 21st, to provide a report on the National Governors’ Association summer meeting. The call will take place tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM. Reporters should email sarah.james@iowa.gov for dial-in information
