Governor Culver Congratulates Hawkeyes On Outback Bowl Victory

DES MOINES - Governor Chet Culver issued the following statement congratulating the University of Iowa football team after the Hawkeyes defeated the University of South Carolina Gamecocks 31-10 in the Outback Bowl, finishing the season with a 9-4 record:

"The Iowa Hawkeyes not only had a great finish to the football season at the Outback Bowl, but the team and their fans were great representatives of our State in the process.

"The players provided a terrific start to the New Year, and showed the nation the strength of Hawkeye football. I want to congratulate Kirk Ferentz and his outstanding coaching staff for their leadership, not only in today's win but also for all of the effort they put into a winning season. And I want to thank President Sally Mason and Athletic Director Gary Barta for the work they do everyday on behalf of the university and our students.

"Most of all, the Iowa fans deserve a lot of credit. They are great representatives of Iowa who demonstrate a real commitment and dedication, not only to the University of Iowa but to our entire state."
