Governor Culver Directs State Resources To Help Montgomery, Union County
Issues disaster proclamation to assist in flood preparation and response
(DES MOINES) – Today, Governor Chet Culver has issued a disaster proclamation for Montgomery and Union Counties following a series of severe storms that moved through the state last night. The action directs state resources to these counties to assist in flood preparation and response.
"As expected, our state was hit by another round of severe weather last night," said Governor Culver. "Bringing high winds and heavy rain, these storms have caused damage throughout Iowa. Unfortunately, these storms were only the beginning, and the National Weather Service has already alerted Iowans to be prepared for more severe weather in the coming days. I urge Iowans to stay on alert, and be prepared should they find themselves in the line of approaching severe weather. As Governor, I will continue to monitor the potential for severe weather, and we here in state government are doing our part to help those who have been affected.”
Overnight, severe weather moved throughout Iowa, with several severe storms reported throughout the state.
The Governor's disaster declaration frees up state resources, and will make it easier for Montgomery County to receive sandbags and water pumps, and for Union County to receive road barricades in preparation for expected and ongoing flooding.
