6am Flood Disaster Response Update

JOHNSTON – Below is the latest information from the Iowa State Emergency Operations Center.

NOTE: The State Emergency Operation’s Center Joint Information Office will be open 24 hours through the duration of the disaster response. The office will provide an update with the latest information every three hours starting immediately.

Latest Major Events:

HOSPITAL CLOSURES: Due to water and power concerns, Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids was closed last night. Patients were evacuated to hospitals throughout central and eastern Iowa.

CURRENT AND STANDING EVACUATIONS: Reports show that mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders are in effect in:
· Linn County – Cedar Rapids
· Jones County – Anamosa
· Johnson County - Iowa City and Coralville
· Des Moines County - Rural areas
· Polk County - Des Moines, Pleasant Hill
· Boone County – Madrid
· Black Hawk County - Cedar Falls and Waterloo
· Scott County – Davenport, Duck Creek Area
· Cedar County – Rochester
· Mahaska County - Rural Areas

POWER OUTAGES: As of 10:30PM more than 40,000 Iowa electric customers are without service, some because of storms Thursday night in eastern Iowa and many because they were in the path of flood waters. MidAmerican reports 18,735 of which 15,749 are in the Quad City area - some actually in Illinois. Alliant Energy has 23,097 customers off and nearly 15,000 of those are in Cedar Rapids and vicinity. The thunderstorm related outages will mostly be repaired by morning

ROAD CLOSURES: Numerous roads continue to be closed across the state.

In the last three hours, US 59 was closed north of Shenandoah due to flooding of the E. Nishnabotna River. In Lee County, IA 16 is now closed to traffic from Lee County Road W55 in Houghton to US 218/IA 27 due to water covering the road.

In addition, Interstate 80 continues to be closed east of Iowa City. Motorists traveling through the state are being directed to use US 61 to US 20 to I-35 when traveling from the east, and I-35, to US 20, to US 61 when traveling from the west.

CURRENT NUMBER OF IOWA NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS DEPLOYED TO RESPOND TO DISASTER: 2,354 Army Guard and 233 Air Guard (Total 2,587)
