Governor Culver Adds Delaware County To Disaster Proclamation
Black Hawk, Buchanan, and Butler counties were added to disaster proclamation yesterday
(Des Moines) – Today, Governor Chet Culver issued a disaster proclamation for Delaware County. Delaware County is the fourth to be covered by a disaster proclamation since severe weather moved across the state Sunday evening.
"As Governor, I continue to monitor the situation in northeast Iowa," said Governor Culver. "I had the opportunity to visit the area earlier today, and saw first-hand the awesome damage that this weekend's severe weather brought to our state. State resources have already been sent to the area, and as damage assessments continue in the coming days, we stand ready to provide any assistance necessary to help those affected by this weekend's severe weather."
The Governor's proclamation makes it easier for those in the affected areas to utilize state resources in their recover efforts.
In addition the Governor's proclamation activated Iowa's Individual Disaster Assistance program for people with low incomes. Iowans with household incomes of up to 130 percent of federal poverty guidelines may apply for a grant of up to $3,300 to help recover from tornado damage. The governor emphasized that this is a reimbursement program, meaning that applicants must include receipts for uninsured loss when applying for help.
The grant application and step-by-step instructions on how to fill it out are found on the front page of the Department of Human Services Web site: http://dhs.iowa.gov/. Look for the words “Storm Help” or call toll-free 877-937-3663 to find out more.
