Statement From Governor Culver Regarding Parkersburg Tornado

Buchanan County added to disaster proclamation

(Des Moines) – Governor Chet Culver has issued the following statement following a severe tornado that affected the northeast Iowa community earlier today. Governor Culver is tentatively planning to tour the region tomorrow.

In addition, Governor Culver has issued a disaster proclamation for Buchanan County, joining Blackhawk and Butler Counties, which were added earlier today.

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CULVER

"My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Parkersburg and New Hartford after a destructive tornado has claimed the lives of several individuals. Early reports indicate that these communities have suffered severe and widespread damage, and I plan to visit the region very soon to offer my support to those affected. Iowans have always relied on our spirit of community to move our state forward, and I’m certain that following this disaster, the communities of Parkersburg and New Hartford will be rebuilt stronger than ever.

"As severe weather continues to move across the state, I am staying in close contact with our state emergency response team, who will be working through the night to monitor the situation. Three counties have already been declared disaster areas, and state government stands ready to do whatever necessary to aid these communities in their recovery.

"Over the coming days, I encourage Iowans to keep a close eye on the weather and be prepared to take shelter immediately, as conditions can deteriorate quickly.

"But more importantly, I ask that the people of Iowa keep those affected by today's severe weather in their prayers tonight."
