Governor Culver Signs Legislation Creating The Iowa Commission On Native American Affairs
DES MOINES – Today, Governor Chet Culver signed legislation that creates the Iowa Commission on Native American Affairs. Housed in the Department of Human Rights, the commission will focus on the issues facing Iowa’s Native American community. The creation of the Commission was proposed in one of the Governor’s bills filed by the Governor in January.
“Native Americans were the first Iowans, and the first to know this beautiful land which would become our state,” said Governor Culver. “This commission will show all Iowans that we as a state respect this heritage. When I became Governor, I asked all Iowans to join with me in creating One Iowa, with One Unlimited Future. To do so will take the talents and skills of every Iowan, and this Commission will help us turn our goals into a reality. I was proud to work with Iowa’s Native American community, tribal governments and legislators to pass this important legislation.”
The creation of the Commission on Native American Affairs was included in Senate File 2400, a budget bill that addresses executive branch Administration and Regulation funding.
Anyone interested in applying to serve on the Commission can download a Boards and Commissions application at http://openup.iowa.gov/boards/bc-resume.pdf.
Additionally, Governor Culver used his line item veto authority on Senate File 2400. Attached is a copy of the veto message that will be sent to Secretary of State Mauro.
