First Lady Mari Culver Leads Shelter Volunteer Day

 

First Lady travels to western Iowa tomorrow to raise awareness of Shelter Spring Cleaning events to be held across Iowa on May 3rd

(DES MOINES) – First Lady Mari Culver is teaming up with coordinators of youth and domestic violence shelters across Iowa to raise awareness and enlist volunteers for Shelter Volunteer Day. Governor Chet Culver will proclaim May 3, 2008 as Shelter Volunteer Day across the state. It’s in conjunction with National Volunteer Week: Sunday, April 27- Saturday, May 3, 2008.

Mrs. Culver said, Iowa 's youth shelters and domestic violence shelters provide invaluable services to women and children. The tremendous, tireless support of the staff of these organizations helps to provide help, stability, and hope for the families they serve.”

The First Lady encourages Iowans to participate in Shelter Spring Cleaning on Saturday, May 3rd . “Together we can demonstrate the importance of volunteering, raise awareness of the services our shelters provide, and help these facilities continue to do the good work that they do,” said Mrs. Culver. On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, she will visit three shelters in western Iowa to raise awareness and recruit volunteers for the May 3rd Shelter Spring Cleaning day.

During National Volunteer Week, the First Lady is asking Iowans to join with her in volunteering for service projects and donating needed items at shelters across Iowa . 38 shelters will participate in Shelter Volunteer Day statewide. AmeriCorps volunteers as well as other volunteer groups are coordinating some local project s.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit www.governor.iowa.gov for complete information on how to become involved.
