First Lady Mari Culver Leads Shelter Volunteer Day

Shelter Spring Cleaning events held across Iowa on May 3rd

(DES MOINES) – First Lady Mari Culver is teaming up with coordinators of youth and domestic violence shelters across Iowa to raise awareness and enlist volunteers for Shelter Volunteer Day. Governor Chet Culver will proclaim May 3, 2008 as Shelter Volunteer Day across the state. It’s in conjunction with National Volunteer Week: Sunday, April 27- Saturday, May 3, 2008.

Mrs. Culver said, “Iowa's youth shelters and domestic violence shelters provide invaluable services to women and children. The tremendous, tireless support of the staff of these organizations helps to provide help, stability, and hope for the families they serve.”

The First Lady encourages Iowans to participate in Shelter Spring Cleaning on Saturday, May 3rd. “Together we can demonstrate the importance of volunteering, raise awareness of the services our shelters provide, and help these facilities continue to do the good work that they do,” said Mrs. Culver.

During National Volunteer Week, the First Lady is asking Iowans to join with her in volunteering for service projects and donating needed items at shelters across Iowa. 38 shelters will participate in Shelter Volunteer Day statewide. AmeriCorps volunteers as well as other volunteer groups are coordinating some local projects.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit www.governor.iowa.gov for complete information on how to become involved. For general information, please call the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service at 1-800-308-5987.

The Governor’s office is proud to partner with the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Coalition for Family and Children’s Services and AmeriCorps volunteers in this statewide effort.
