Statement On 40th Anniversary Of Death Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BELOW IS A STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CHET CULVER AND LT. GOVERNOR PATTY JUDGE:

“On this, the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we urge all Iowans to reflect on Dr. King’s life and legacy. As moving and poignant as his words were, his lifelong commitment to peace and non-violence perhaps spoke even louder.

“You will probably hear parts of his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech on radio and television today. His words stir emotion and cause us to pause and think about how far our state and country have come in four decades. But there is still work to be done.

“We urge you to stand up for justice for all Iowans and reject discrimination of any kind. The time has come for Iowans to lock arms and stand united against intolerance and indifference. On the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s death, let us all celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of this impassioned and dedicated champion of civil rights.”
