Governor Thanks Mason City Students For Support Of Bill To Expand Bottle Bill

DES MOINES – Today, Governor Culver stood side-by-side with youth leaders from the Mason City YIELD (Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development) youth group to urge passage of legislation to expand the bottle bill. The Governor is encouraged by the new momentum behind the legislation, led by Reps. Beth Wessel Kroeschell and Donovan Olson, which recently passed the House Environmental Protection Committee 13-7.

“I was pleased to see the bill pass 13-7 out of committee on Monday, and I believe this shows there is momentum building to expand the Bottle Bill to include the 330 million bottles and cans currently not covered.” said Governor Culver.

During the press conference, the Governor was joined by Robin Anderson, Executive Director of the Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce and leader of the YIELD group, in addition to students Taylor Johnson of Mason City High School and Jordan Adams of Newman Catholic.

When asked about expanding the Bottle Bill, Taylor Johnson said, “I think some adults don’t realize there are a lot of new products going out that can’t be recycled and it would be great if we could just all work together to get the job done. At sporting events, there are lot of bottles that can’t be recycled and are just left behind.”
