Governor Culver Statement On Model Core Curriculum And Education Standards

Des Moines – Below is a statement from Governor Chet Culver commending the Iowa Senate for working on legislation to mandate Iowa’s model core curriculum statewide:

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CHET CULVER:

I want to commend the Iowa Senate for working on legislation to mandate Iowa’s model core curriculum statewide for the 2010-2011 school year for grades 9-12, and for the 2014-2015 school year for grades K-8. It is my hope that Republicans and Democrats will work together to quickly pass this legislation and send it to my desk. I support mandating the core curriculum for all schools because it adds detail, rigor and relevance that will make our statewide content standards work. It also ensures that all of Iowa’s students, regardless of where they live, are getting the education we know they need. In addition, I support expanding our content standards to include social studies, which is currently in development at the Department of Education. Taking these important steps will ensure Iowa maintains its national leadership in education.
