Governor Culver Signs Proclamation Supporting Iowa Caucus Resolution And Declaring January 3, 2008 "Chronic Disease Awareness And Action Day"

Des Moines - Iowa Governor Chet Culver today recognized the historic, bi-partisan work of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease and the Partnership for Better Heath in advance of the Iowa Caucuses on January 3, 2008. The national non-partisan organizations are dedicated to addressing the issue of chronic diseases and the impact that they have on our health care system.

“Iowans have a rare opportunity to push our next President on the issues that matter not only to our state, but to our country,” said Governor Culver. “One of the greatest challenges to our future is the rising incidence of chronic disease. We must do what we can to raise awareness to the causes of chronic disease, and take action to stop its spread. That is why I call on Iowans to support this historic resolution, and demonstrate our state’s commitment to a healthier future for everyone.”

These organizations are making Iowa political history by having a resolution introduced and approved in every caucus of both parties across the state. Earlier, Chairs of the Iowa Democratic and Republican parties endorsed the resolution and encouraged their members to support it when their precinct caucuses meet. Additionally, leaders of both the Iowa Senate and Iowa House of Representatives and former Governors Branstad and Vilsack have endorsed the resolution.

“Health care is a critically important issue in Iowa and nationally,” said David Lyons, former Iowa Insurance Commissioner and current Iowa Farm Bureau Federation executive. “The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease is making historic strides in raising awareness and action.”

Paul Greenwood, representing the Greater Des Moines Partnership said, “Chronic disease does not care if you are a Republican or Democrat; Iowa business leaders want to be part of the solution on this problem and the cooperation and attention from this program is vital.”

Governor Culver made comments at the event and signed an official State of Iowa proclamation declaring January 3, 2008 as Chronic Disease Awareness and Action Day.
