Governor Culver Releases 2008 Drug Control Strategy Report in Creston

Governor Also Highlights Rural Accomplishments

CRESTON – Today, Governor Chet Culver released the 2008 Drug Control Strategy report and highlighted the strength of rural Iowa during the 10th stop on his “Capitol for a Day” tour.

“As Governor, I am committed to building one Iowa, where both urban and rural Iowa come together to move our state forward,” said Governor Culver. “This important work has begun this year as investments in renewable energy, manufacturing and agriculture are bringing new jobs and vitality to communities all across our state. I am committed to building upon this progress so we can create an unlimited future for all Iowans.”

Culver also highlighted what the state has done to meet the challenges affecting rural Iowa, especially against methamphetamine and drug use. Together with Office of Drug Control Policy Director Gary Kendall, the Governor also released the 2008 Drug Control Strategy Report. The report highlights the progress Iowa has taken to combat substance abuse and drug-related crime in the state.

In addition, the report showed the following trends being seen throughout Iowa regarding drug use:

  • Iowa has seen a 90% decline in the number of meth labs since the Iowa Pseudoephedrine Control Act was passed in May 2005.
  • A steady decrease in meth-related prison admissions
  • The number of Iowans treated for meth abuse has declined slightly over the last two years.
  • Fewer children are being found in homes where methamphetamine is being manufactured.
  • Fewer Iowa youth report using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Alcohol remains the most troublesome drug of abuse in Iowa.
  • Marijuana continues to be the most prevalently abused illegal drug in Iowa among both adults and juveniles.

“Iowa has made tremendous progress in the war against drugs,” said the Governor. “We must do whatever we can to make sure that we only go forward and never retreat. I call on Iowans to join with the Culver/Judge Administration in this fight, and together I know we can reduce drug use in our communities and give Iowans the tools they need and deserve for a brighter tomorrow.”
