Joint Statement From Governor Culver And Marvin Pomerantz On Education

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver and Marvin Pomerantz recently had a productive meeting on the future of education in Iowa. Below is a joint statement from Governor Culver and Mr. Pomerantz:

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CHET CULVER AND MARVIN POMERANTZ:

“We share a common goal: to make Iowa schools the best in the nation.

“Progress was made in 2007 to reach this goal by increasing teacher pay, increasing funding for our regents institutions and community colleges, and expanding access to quality preschool.

“However, we know there is still much work to be done.

“We have agreed to work together in a bipartisan way to advance, and support, legislative policy and budget recommendations next session to expand Iowa’s model core curriculum to every school district and address issues related to equity and adequacy in our education system.

“In addition, legislative discussion related to equity and adequacy should include: statewide proficiency standards; performance pay for all who teach; and improving the delivery system of secondary education. Finally, we are interested in seeing results from important pilot projects related to pay-for-performance and career ladders for teachers, as well as reviewing successes some districts may have had related to the regional high school approach.

“We look forward to working together with Iowans and the legislature on these issues that will benefit all Iowans and address our common goal of making Iowa schools the best in the nation.”
