'Final Season' Throws A Perfect Game

Governor Urges Iowans to See New Iowa Movie

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver is calling on Iowans to see “The Final Season,” a major motion picture about the 1991 Norway baseball team, which opens today.

“Our state is filled with many interesting and unique stories, and today Iowans can see one come to life on the silver screen,” said Governor Culver. “The Final Season is a great movie, and will showcase to people across the country and around the globe the beauty of our state and its people. I hope people across the state will take some time this weekend to watch this movie and see for themselves this inspiring Iowa story.”

Governor Culver and First Lady Mari Culver saw the movie last weekend at its Iowa premier in Cedar Rapids.

The number of people who see the movie this weekend will determine how many more screens will show the picture next weekend, giving Iowans an opportunity to play an integral role in the movie's success.

The PG-rated motion picture, based on the real-life story, tells the story of the 1991 Norway baseball team. It's a true story of a coach who inspired a broken team and brought hope to an Iowa town when they needed it most. Facing adversity and unexpected struggles, the Norway Tigers are forced to find strength in themselves and faith in each other to bring their winning tradition to life one last time. With the odds suddenly stacked against them, Norway's coach tells the team to ask themselves one question: "How do you want to be remembered?"

Norway rallied to win its 20th and final Iowa state title. The next year, the school merged with larger district Benton of Van Horne.

The film features actors like Sean Astin, Rachael Leigh Cook and Ottumwa native Tom Arnold.
