Proclamation Issued For Delaware County For Debris Removal, Resident Assistance

Iowa denied Federal assistance after August floods

(DES MOINES)- Governor Chet Culver has issued a proclamation of disaster emergency for Delaware County following a severe storm that moved through the area on October 7, 2007. This proclamation allows that state funds be used to assist with debris removal and provide eligible residents with individual assistance.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver has learned that a request for a program designed to provide direct federal assistance to Iowans has been denied. The request was made to help Iowans affected by the mid-August floods in north central and south east Iowa. Governor Culver requested what is called Individual Assistance, which includes federal grants and loans to help citizens recover from disasters.

“I’m disappointed by this denial,” Governor Culver stressed. “We will work with local and state officials to help Iowans with the resources we have in our state,” he added.

The request was made for these 16 counties: Allamakee, Appanoose, Boone, Calhoun, Cherokee, Davis, Howard, Humboldt, Mahaska, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Van Buren, Wapello, Wayne, Webster and Wright.

An earlier request by Iowa for federal assistance to help rebuild infrastructure and assist specific non-profit agencies under a federal program called Public Assistance was granted. FEMA and Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management staff have been helping local engineers and public works officials identify appropriate projects and apply for these funds.
