Generation Iowa Commission to Hold Open Forum at University of Iowa on October 24
Urges Students and Area Young Professionals to Join Effort to Make the State More Attractive for Young Iowans
(Des Moines) — The Generation Iowa Commission will host a “Generation Iowa Open Forum” on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:00 PM in the Iowa Memorial Union at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
“The goal of the open forum is to find ways to make Iowa a more attractive place for young people,” said Commission Chair Kyle Carlson of Colfax. “This interactive forum gives young Iowans an opportunity to be decision-makers and explain why they will stay in Iowa or plan to leave.”
University of Iowa students and Iowa City metro-area young professionals are encouraged to participate in the forum.
Governor Chet Culver said he’s eager to hear what ideas are proposed by Iowa’s young professionals. “I want to know how they think we can be more effective in keeping their friends and peers here in Iowa. Their presence and contributions are critical to Iowa’s future.”
“Iowa is a great place to live, and there are a million things we could do to make the state even better,” said Commission Vice-Chair Rachel Judisch of Lake View. “We want to know, ‘If you were in charge, what would you do different to make the state better?’”
Prior to the open forum, the commission will hold its monthly meeting where members will give reports on progress and handle administrative business.
On April 5, 2007, Governor Culver signed HF 617, better known as the "Generation Iowa" bill, into law. The commission, composed of 15 young Iowans ages 18-35, was established to advise and assist in the retention and attraction of young adults to Iowa. The commission must submit a written report with their findings to Governor Culver and the legislature by January 15, 2008.
