Governor Culver Commends U.S. House For Passing SCHIP Reauthorization
Governor Urges President to Reconsider Veto Threat
(Des Moines) Below is a statement from Governor Chet Culver on the passage of the State Children's Health Insurance Program this evening in the U.S. House of Representatives:
STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CHET CULVER:
"I am very pleased the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bipartisan compromise bill reauthorizing the SCHIP program. This bill now goes to the United States Senate, where it will receive similar bipartisan support including from Iowa's Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley. Insuring children is not a partisan issue, and I am pleased Republicans joined Democrats in supporting this critically important program. I strongly urge President Bush to reconsider his threat to veto this bill funding the children's health insurance program. A veto by President Bush puts health insurance for 21,562 Iowa children in jeopardy. This is unacceptable. My goal is to insure every child in the state of Iowa, and to reach this goal it is essential that President Bush sign into law the bipartisan SCHIP compromise bill when it comes to his desk."
