Governor Culver Calls On Iowa Delegation To Support Bipartisan SCHIP Compromise
Governor Sends Letter to Congressional Delegation Urging Support Reauthorization Before September 30th
(Des Moines) Today, Governor Chet Culver sent a letter to Iowa’s Congressional delegation urging the Iowa members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support the bipartisan compromise to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) prior to September 30, 2007.
In the letter, Governor Culver wrote, “Swift passage of the compromise agreement is needed to avoid funding shortfalls in our state and to ensure the continued success of this critical safety net program for the next five years.”
Yesterday, President Bush threatened to veto a $35 billion compromise SCHIP bill – a bill critically important to Iowa children currently using SCHIP. The outline of the bipartisan compromise was released this afternoon. The U.S. House of Representatives will likely vote on the bipartisan compromise legislation early next week, with the U.S. Senate voting on the measure shortly thereafter.
