Labor Day Message From Governor Chet Culver & Lt. Governor Patty Judge
(Des Moines) - Below is a message from Governor Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge:
“Labor Day was created more than a century ago to celebrate the American worker. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York and sponsored by the Central Labor Union. The purpose was to acknowledge and reflect on the social and economic achievements of the American worker. This Labor Day, we appreciate the contributions workers continue to make in this country, ensuring America's continued strength and prosperity.
“Iowans have a reputation for their strong work ethic, and Labor Day, for many Iowans is a day of rest that is well deserved.
“Labor Day also marks the end of summer. This weekend represents the beginning of fall and the traditions associated with it: the change of seasons, children returning to school and the start of high school and college football.
“We must also remember those who will not get a day off. Most importantly our thoughts and prayers are with soldiers stationed overseas. We wish for their safe return home. The commitment to our country and courage they have show is incredible and inspiring.
“It is our sincere hope that all Iowans have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.”
