Lt. Governor Discusses Campus Security In Virginia

Continues to Address Ways to Make Iowa’s University Campuses Safer

(Williamsburg, VA) – Today, Lt. Governor Patty Judge discussed ways to improve campus security with Lt. Governors from across the country.

While at the annual summer meeting of the National Lt. Governor’s Association (NLGA), Lt. Governor Judge met with Virginia Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, as well as officials from Virginia Tech University.

“Protecting our Regent Universities is one of the Culver/Judge Administration’s top priorities,” said Lt. Governor Judge. “Following the tragic events at Virginia Tech, all Iowans became aware of the inherent vulnerabilities that exist on a college campus. That is why I continue to work with our homeland security officials to find ways to make our schools safer. And I appreciate this opportunity to learn about successes and challenges from those who experienced this tragedy first hand.”

Earlier this year, 32 people were killed when a lone gunman opened fire at Virginia Tech University. In response to this event, Governor Culver and Lt. Governor Judge ordered a review to be completed at Iowa’s three regents universities. The Lt. Governor released the results of that report last week, and next week the Iowa Board of Regents plans to review these findings and begin discussing ways to improve campus security.

The NLGA meeting runs though today. During the four day meeting, Lt. Governor’s from 33 states addressed other issues, such as improving the environment, transportation, and health care.
