Memorial Day Message From Governor Culver and Lt. Governor Judge
DES MOINES – Below is a message from Governor Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge:
“Memorial Day is a time for each of us to remember the men and women who have bravely served and died for our country. Today, as we honor our loved ones who have passed, let us especially pay tribute to the 56 Iowans who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The men and women who have proudly fought on behalf of the United States and the State of Iowa truly remind us what it is to be an American.
“It is important that on Memorial Day we not only remember the fallen soldiers who proudly served our country, but that we also think of their families and the losses that they have endured. Although our loved ones are gone, we can remember them today and pay them the respects that they deserve.
“As we keep our nation’s heroes and their families in our thoughts and prayers, we must also continue to think of those currently stationed overseas and wish for their safe return home. The commitment to our country and courage that they have shown is incredible and inspiring.
“The National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress, asks that we each take a moment at 3:00 p.m. to pause in an act of national unity to remember those who have gone before us. We call on Iowans to observe this moment of silence and remember those who fought to preserve the freedoms that we all enjoy.
“To those who have lost loved ones in the name of our nation, we thank you for your sacrifice and keep you in our thoughts and prayers. They may be gone, but rest assured, their memory will not be forgotten.”
