Governor Suspends Highway Load Limits to Assist Kansas Storm Victims
DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver today has issued an emergency proclamation suspending weight limits on Iowa’s highways to assist in recovery efforts following last weekend’s severe weather in Kansas. The proclamation eases weight restrictions on semi-trailers who are delivering supplies to affected parts of Kansas.
Governor Culver issued today’s proclamation following a request from Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
“Iowa always has been there to help its neighbors when in need, and we are ready to do so once more,” said the Governor. “With this proclamation, Iowa is helping the citizens of Kansas in their recovery efforts. Our hearts go out to those affected by last weekend’s deadly weather, and we are keeping everyone in our thoughts and prayers.”
The State of Kansas was severely impacted by severe weather on May 4th, including tornados, hail, high winds and flooding. These storms caused loss of life, personal injury and excessive damage to businesses and homes, leading Governor Kathleen Sebelius to declare a state of disaster emergency in 34 counties. 95% of Greensburg, Kansas was destroyed by a tornado, leaving at least 11 citizens dead and displacing the approximately 1,400 residents.
