Governor Culver One Of Ten Governors To Sign Stem Cell Letter To U.S. Senate Leaders
(Des Moines) Today, Governor Chet Culver and governors from nine other states signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging members of the U.S. Senate to vote to lift President Bush’s restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and pass the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 (S. 5). The letter was sent today and a vote is expected in the Senate this afternoon.
On February 28, 2007, Governor Culver signed SF 162, “The Iowa Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.” This legislation repealed a 2002 law that banned life-saving stem cell research in Iowa. Today Governor Culver said, “I’m proud to stand with my fellow governors in urging the U.S. Senate to lift President Bush’s restrictions on embryonic stem cell research. I promised Iowans that my administration would do everything possible to repeal this law. The good news is that with the help of courageous legislators, we did just that.
“I am incredibly proud of Sen. Harkin’s efforts to bring back this important debate. Today, I want all Americans to have the same hope and optimism that Iowans have, as scientists find cures for serious illnesses.”
