Steve Young Joins The New State Veterans' Cemetery As Director

(Des Moines) Steve Young has joined the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) as the Director of the new State Veterans’ Cemetery, which is to be located near Van Meter, Iowa. Construction on the cemetery grounds and administrative buildings begins this fall with an expected opening in spring 2008.

Governor Chet Culver said, “I am very pleased to have Steve Young, an experienced administrator with an outstanding military background, accept this important position. Steve will ensure that the Iowa State Veterans’ Cemetery is a proper final resting place for Iowa’s distinguished veterans.”

Mr. Young has long been a member of the United States Air Force and Iowa Air National Guard, having first joined the service in 1972. He has served in the United Kingdom and Germany, and at several bases within the United States. In 1998, while on leave from his job as an Assistant Iowa Attorney General, Mr. Young was deployed for six months to Bosnia. Mr. Young is still associated with the Iowa Air National Guard and is the state’s senior military attorney. He performs his military duty in Colorado Springs for the United States Air Force Space Command, providing legal advice on Guard matters to the command’s senior military lawyer. Mr. Young serves in the rank of Colonel.

Before joining IDVA, Mr. Young served as the Deputy Director, and later Director, of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (5/1999 – 1/12/2007). Before that, he was an Assistant Iowa Attorney General (7/1991 – 4/1999). He is married and has two adult children. The Young’s son is currently serving in the United States Air Force and recently returned from an assignment in Afghanistan.
