Culver Appoints Jon Murphy as Federal Relations Director
(Des Moines) – Governor Chet Culver today named Jon Murphy as Director of Iowa’s Office of State-Federal Relations. Based in Washington, D.C, Murphy will serve as the chief liaison between state government and the federal government.
“I am honored Governor Culver has asked me to serve the state in this capacity,” said Murphy. “Iowa is fortunate to have strong congressional representation and I look forward to working with the entire delegation to accomplish great things for the state. There is a tremendous opportunity for Iowa to play a leading role on many national issues. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”
Jon Murphy comes to the Culver Administration from Iowa State University (ISU) where he served for over six years as the university’s federal liaison in Washington, D.C. Murphy was appointed ISU’s Director of Federal Governmental Relations in August of 2004, after serving as the Associate Director of Governmental Relations since January 2001. As Associate Director, he opened and operated the university’s first-ever Washington, D.C. office.
Murphy’s previous work experience includes more than two years as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Leonard Boswell, handling the issues of Agriculture, Banking, Energy, Environment, Housing and the Interior. He has previously worked in state government, serving three legislative sessions as an Assistant in the Iowa House of Representatives.
In addition to his work in policy and advocacy, Jon has worked in organizational politics, serving in several different capacities on numerous election campaigns.
A Des Moines native, Murphy is a graduate of Iowa State University and Dowling High School. He is married to Katherine Lefert, a pediatric physical therapist at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
