$24.3 Million Awarded to Communities Across Iowa

25th Anniversary of Iowa CDBG Program

(Des Moines) – Awards totaling $24.3 million were announced today for communities across Iowa. The Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) awarded the funds from two federal initiatives, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and HOME Investment Partnership Program to 82 projects across the state. Michael Tramontina, Interim IDED director, presented awards in Atlantic, Storm Lake, Grinnell and Waverly.

"The cities and towns across the state provide the foundation for a successful future in Iowa," said Governor Chet Culver. "These funds help ensure that all Iowans have the opportunity to thrive in a strong community and be a part of vibrant tomorrow."

Communities across the state will receive a total of over $24.3 million for community facilities, services and infrastructure improvements, as well as the creation or rehabilitation of affordable housing across Iowa.

"Iowa’s economy depends on communities meeting the needs of citizens," said Michael Tramontina, Interim IDED director. "These funds help meet those needs while leveraging more than $41 million in local investments and providing nearly 600 construction jobs across the state."

This year’s award ceremonies also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CDBG program in Iowa. From 1982 to 2007, the CDBG program and HOME program have funded 3,269 awards in 650 cities and counties, and provided more than $873 million in funding.

These grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). IDED is responsible for administering the funds in the non-metropolitan areas of the state. Applications are solicited annually, usually during the fall. The grants are awarded based on the need and potential impact for the project, benefit to low- and moderate-income persons, and commitment of local resources to the project.
