Red Cross Recommends Sheltering in Homes During Power Outages

(Washington, DC) Governor Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge urges Iowans to follow steps offered by the Red Cross when sheltering in their homes during power outages.

According to the Red Cross:

Severe winter weather is causing unsafe travel and power outages across Eastern Iowa. Due to current conditions, the American Red Cross Grant Wood Area Chapter recommends residents take shelter in their homes and not risk travel to locations that may have power. The organization will open shelters only when it is safe to do so.

The Red Cross recommends the following simple steps to ensure individuals and families are prepared for and safe during power outages:

Before a Blackout Happens:

Obtain or assemble essential supplies in a central location. Supplies should include a flashlight, extra batteries, portable battery-operated radio or television, at least one gallon of water per person per day for at least five days, non-perishable food and a non-electric can opener.

During a Blackout:

  • Only use battery-powered light, like a flashlight, for emergency lighting. Due to the extreme risk of fire, do not use candles during a power outage.
  • Turn off electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.
  • To keep perishable food cold, avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Do not run a generator inside a confined space, like a home or garage, due to the extreme danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a generator to a home's electrical system unless you have an approved power transfer switch installed.
  • Listen to local radio for updated information.
  • If possible, check on neighbors who are elderly or may need assistance.
