Statement from Governor Culver on Passage of Bill to Lift Ban on Stem Cell Research
I am very pleased the Iowa House has joined the Iowa Senate in lifting our state's restrictive ban on lifesaving embryonic stem-cell research. An overwhelming majority Iowans embrace the facts and support this potentially life-saving opportunity that is before us.
I look forward to having the honor of signing the Iowa Stem Cell Research and Cures bill into law.
The research enabled by this initiative has the potential to unveil cures for debilitating and life-threatening illnesses. I am thrilled that Iowa will soon join surrounding states in conducting this type of groundbreaking and potentially lifesaving scientific research.
I want to offer a special thank-you to the courageous Iowans who came forward at Wednesday's public hearing to tell their personal stories. Despite being affected by debilitating illnesses like ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, cancer, cardiovascular or spinal cord injury, dozens of Iowans came to the Capitol to stand on the side of hope. Thank you. Iowa is a better place today for your efforts.
