Governor Culver Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Fallen Soldier

GOVERNOR SIGNS FIRST EXECUTIVE ORDER CALLING FOR FLAGS TO BE FLOWN AT HALF STAFF TO HONOR FALLEN IOWA SOLDIERS

(Des Moines) Governor Chet Culver today orders that all flags in the state be flown at half staff on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, from 8 a.m. (CST) until sunset in honor of Command Sgt. Maj. Marilyn L. Gabbard, 46, of Polk City who died January 20, 2007, while serving in Iraq.

The Governor's directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state until sunset Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half–staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

This afternoon, Governor Culver signed his first Executive Order as Governor calling for flags to be flown at half staff throughout the state of Iowa to honor fallen Iowa soldiers.
