Commercial Property Tax Task Force Releases Report to Governor

Governor Culver Proud of the Hard Work Done by the Task Force

(Des Moines) Today, Governor Chet Culver’s 9-member Commercial Property Tax Task Force released its findings and recommendations in a report to the Governor.

In a letter to the Governor, the Task Force said, “Our timeframe was limited and our charge was specific. With that in mind, the Task Force makes recommendations specifically to address, to an extent, the inequities for Iowa’s commercial property tax payers. The Task Force desires to ‘stop the bleeding’ of commercial property tax payers and send all tax payers a clear message that more needs to be done.”

“This is a complicated issue and I am very appreciative of the fact that the Task Force went into extra innings to complete this hard work,” said Governor Culver. “I plan on addressing property taxes in my budget address to the legislature on Tuesday and will offer some immediate relief to over-taxed commercial property tax payers. I absolutely agree with the Task Force’s point that, ‘This will only succeed if it is a bi-partisan effort,’ and I look forward to working with both sides of the aisle on this important issue.”

Governor Culver will take the necessary time to review the recommendations made by the Task Force and determine how to move forward to lower commercial property taxes and make the system fair for businesses here in Iowa.
