Governor Proclaims Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day & Dr. MLK Jr. Week
(Des Moines) Governor Culver proclaimed January 15th, 2007 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the week of January 15th through January 21st, 2007 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week.
The official proclamation reads: “In striving to become ‘One Iowa,’ – economically, culturally and spiritually – it is appropriate that we honor the late civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient and recognize Dr. King’s legacy of understanding and peace among all people.”
“It is hard to imagine an individual who embodies the spirit of bringing people together more than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Governor Culver. “We can all learn from the lessons of Dr. King. He represents more than the incredible work he did as a civil rights leader. Dr. King’s legacy represents hope and reminds us that we all play a role in making not only Iowa, but the world, a better place. According to Dr. King, the only thing we need to serve our people is, ‘a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.’ I am incredibly privileged to proclaim Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Week as one of my first acts as governor.”
