Governor-elect Culver Names Commercial Property Tax Commission Membership

Bipartisan Commission will Develop Legislative Proposals Offering Tax Relief for Iowa Commercial Property Owners

(Des Moines) Today, Governor-elect Chet Culver announced the membership of the Iowa Commercial Property Tax Commission of 2007. The nine member commission will hold its first public meeting on December 21.

“I have great confidence in this bipartisan commission to investigate and recommend sound proposals to provide tax relief for Iowa’s commercial property owners,” Culver said.

According to a study conducted by the ITA in 2006, Iowa’s commercial property tax rates are among the top five highest among states in urban areas. Rural areas do not fare much better, with commercial rates in the top ten.

“The goal is that tax policy in this administration will be fair, equitable, and easy to understand,” Culver said. “Using those principles as a guide, the commission will seek out innovative ways to provide tax relief for Iowa small business owners.”
