Governor Culver’s top priority is keeping Iowans safe. When the tornados, storms, and floods of 2008 struck our state, Governor Culver worked tirelessly with state public safety leadership to ensure Guard troops and state troopers were deployed to communities in need, during and after the storms. - Governor Culver signed new legislation strengthening Iowa’s sex offender laws to protect Iowa’s children and our communities.
- Governor Culver signed legislation that will invest $130 million to build a new state-of-the-art prison in Fort Madison.
- Through the I-JOBS program, the Culver/Judge Administration will invest $88.5 million for community-based correctional facilities across the state.
- Governor Culver signed Executive Order 15, which created the Ex-Offender Reentry Coordinating Council. The council will establish an integrated system for coordinating the planning and provision of offender transitional and re-entry services among and between state, local and nonprofit agencies.
- Iowa took a step in the right direction in eradicating the creation of methamphetamines in Iowa by creating a central repository of people who purchase pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is a key element in making methamphetamine. Pharmacies are required to provide information in an electronic log book.
- Governor Culver signed legislation that expanded the definition of human trafficking to include sexually explicit performances. The legislation also permitted the appointment of a guardian ad litem to assist any child-victim witness of human trafficking.
